So you'd like to be part of Silas Hawke's gang, then? Read on, my friend, to see if you've got the right stuff.

Responsibilities of Bad Brothers

As one of Silas Hawke's minions, you are tasked with keeping "peace" in Old Rose Harbor - and by peace, we mean the peaceful exchange of money. The Vein is of the utmost importance; it's up to you to ensure that rival trade organizations (such as the Drain) don't take away Hawke's profits, because that would bankrupt the harbor and cause chaos on the ocean. Keep your eyes peeled and your weapons sharp, because those shipments have to be in on time, and if anyone threatens your ships or your cargo, it's your job to give them a friendly warning.

You have to be comfortable with killing people; that's one of those niggling little truths about being part of a successful enterprise such as the Vein. Hawke expects total obedience, but he doesn't mind a little inter-Brother competition (fosters a team spirit), and if you need to scrag someone to get ahead, well...he'll understand.

But mostly, you should worry about the state of the Harbor. As long as the civvies are paying their taxes and keeping their noses out of your business, it's your job to make sure they stay alive and cranking out profits. Don't terrorize the locals, and don't scare away foreigners, unless they're doing something that might have a negative effect on the Vein. Then, by all means, get creative with them.

Rules of Bad Brotherhood

  • All Bad Brothers are called Bad Brothers, even the women.
  • All Bad Brothers obey Hawke without question, even when that means going against an order from a superior.
  • All Drain operatives must be dealt with swiftly; capturing them alive is preferable, but if that is regrettably impossible, it's your job to make sure they don't make it home for supper.
  • Keep the secrets of the Brotherhood. Don't talk about the Little Black Book, don't talk about the Sanctum, don't talk about Hawke's favorite color (heliotrope), don't talk about the recipe for Scrag-your-mum Stew.
