Finding a True Name

From ThornsWiki

When an adult galdori has reached a certain level in his or her magical training (out-of-character, that would be Mastery level in their magical focus), they can begin the search for their true name, a syllable in Monite that allows them to know themselves on a deeper level.

This quest is mysterious and utterly personal as well as difficult. Once the true name of any galdor is learned, they are able to speak spells in their minds without having to say the words aloud, as they now have a more intimate relationship with the mona. This increases their magical ability substantially.

The True Name Ritual

The process is complex and different for every person. It involves a spiritual journey, sometimes undertaken during an actual physical journey to a solitary location. Meditation and ritual spells are used to initiate a deep conversation with the mona. During this ritual, the galdor normally undergoes some personality adjustment and a realigning of worldviews as they grow to know themselves better.

Most galdori learn their true name around age 30-40, but some do not discover it until much later in life. The percent of galdori who actually learn their true names is low, about 4-5%. It is not considered a necessity for adult galdori, and for many it involves too much hard work and self-reflection. Some are unable to find their true names, despite trying; this is generally related to having the wrong approach, the wrong attitude, or some other kind of mental instability (such as schizophrenia).
