Seer Stones

From ThornsWiki

Seer stones, also known as scrystones in slang, are a special type of lodestone that resonates with fine-tuned monic frequencies. The odd properties of this stone (known as ferrous-monic oxide to scientists) allow them to be tempered to resonate together even when they are separated by a great distance. This allows them to be a conduit between two galdori (or even wicks), who use the stones for scrying with each other.

Because this stone only relays high-pitched sound waves, they are only useful for auditory communication, not vision or any other senses.

Function

The galdor on one end speaks a very simple scrying spell and begins speaking into the stone, using scrying methods to visualize the target of the message. The target, as long a he or she is within range of a lodestone, hears the message played out inside their head. Certain scrying spells allow others in close proximity to hear this message as well, but most are written to allow for complete privacy. This spell can also be tweaked to send one message to many different targets, though this is difficult.

There are very rare cases of scrystones being made that allow for completely cognitive Clairvoyant conversation, but they are not immune from being spied on by skilled sorcerers.

Availability

Seer stones are very expensive; typically, only galdori are in possession of them. They can be purchased on their own, set into rings, or hung around the neck like necklaces. Because of their small size, they are convenient and popular. Most galdori carry one around. It is a significant purchase, as the forging of a seer stone is a complex and delicate process.

Limitations

Since seer stones only allow for the relaying of messages, they are not considered intrinsically magical. However, no other known substance can relay such clear messages over such long distances (the maximum range of the pocket-sized seer stone has been reported as 800 miles, though larger ones can theoretically send a message even farther).

Because seer stones are not tuned to specific individuals, stealing a galdor's seer stone will not allow you to receive messages intended for him. To receive a message via seer stone, the individual in question must be within very close proximity to one, which is why seer stones are worn close to the body, in a pocket or on jewelry.
