- Opium - a narcotic drug that is obtained from the unripe seedpods of the opium poppy. Raw opium may be ground into a powder, sold as lumps, cakes, or bricks, or treated further to obtain derivatives such as morphine, codeine, and heroin. Causes euphoria, followed by a sense of well-being and a calm drowsiness or sedation. Comes with risk of addiction, nausea, confusion, shortness of breath, unconsciousness and death in large doses.
