Current Season

Currently, it is Autumn Season 2718. The Autumn Season consists of Dentis and Vortas, each month 40 days long, making the season 80 days.

Vita's Calendar System

Spring

Spring in Vita is the time of new growth everywhere in the Ten Kingdoms, even in the deserts of Mugroba and the cold landscape of Hox. In Anaxas, spring is windy and surprisingly dry, with much of the east and south near the Arova fertile and green with the thawing of snow from the north. Planting season is in Bethas, with farmers all across Anaxas eager to get their fields ready for the rainy season that is to come. The days grow longer, but the clouds grow thicker.

  • Intas (40 days)
  • Bethas (40 days)
    • 80 days - 2 months OOC (Mar - Apr)

The first day of the new year is Intas 1st, the first day of Spring and Clock's Eve in the Kingdom of Anaxas.

Rainy Season

The rainy season in Vita brings monsoons and thunderstorms and rain even to the harshest of landscapes. In Anaxas, the rainy season is cloudy, dreary, and, yes, very wet. Loshis is cool and wet and rather gloomy, but the temperatures rising considerably in Hamis until it's unbearably humid and thunderstorms are almost a daily occurrence. Water from the rainy season is often stored in anticipation of the Dry Season after Summer.

  • Loshis (40 days)
  • Hamis (40 days)
    • 80 days - 2 months OOC (May-Jun)

Summer

Summer in Vita is hot, but not as hot as the Dry Season. The height of the growing season after the rains, farmlands are beautiful and heavy with crops, some of which are harvested before the dry season. The beginning of Roalis is hot and humid, with a gradual dropping of temperature and a coming dryness by the end of the month. Anaxi galdori love to travel in Roalis, for much of Anaxas (if not all of Vita) is beautiful in this season, despite the heat.

  • Roalis (80 days)
    • 80 days - 2 months OOC (Jul-Aug)

Dry Season

Temperatures across Vita drop a fair amount as Roalis draws to a close, and rain all but ceases to fall for this month. The air becomes dry and crisp, especially at night. Fields begin to dry up and blooms wither. Sandstorms whip across Mugroba and bog fires are common in the northeastern fens and swamps of Anaxas. Many Anaxi farmers use controlled fires to refresh their spent fields after harvest, though the winds that pick up considerably at the end of Yaris make this practice dangerous without galdori sorcerers keeping watch.

  • Yaris (80 days)
    • 80 days - 2 months OOC (Sept-Oct)

Autumn

Autumn in Vita is cooler, with some of the more extreme Kingdoms already seeing sleet and snow as early as mid-Dentis. The end of the dry season brings a shortening of days and the end of Autumn is dark and cold, ushering in Winter again. Autumn sees a return of rain, with touches of frost. Animals prepare for hibernation and the deciduous trees lose their leaves, with hunting of wild game being a popular past time in Anaxas, particularly in early Vortas.

  • Dentis (40)
  • Vortas (40)
    • 80 days - 2 months OOC (Nov-Dec)

Winter

Winters in Vita depend on the region. In Anaxas, winters are wet and cold, with the western and northernmost parts of Anaxas being bitter and frigid, especially near the mountains that make the border to Hesse. Below freezing weather occurs even as far south as Old Rose Harbor, though the islands between Old Rose and Mugroba generally stay above freezing all year round. Rare is the year when the Harbor sees more than a few inches of snow, while the villages to the west often see several feet. Winter is dark, with the northernmost and southernmost Kingdoms experiencing very short periods of daylight while Anaxas enjoys a bit light due to it's somewhat central position.

  • Achtus (40 days)
  • Ophus (40 days)
    • 80 days - 2 months OOC (Jan - Feb)

The last day of the year is Ophus 40th.

Months, Weeks and Days

Each month has forty days, broken up into four weeks of ten days each, except for Roalis and Yaris that have 80. The day ends and a new day begins when the moon is highest in the sky. Each day is made up of ten houses, each of which represent three hours (meaning there are thirty hours in a day). Hours are broken up into sixty minutes each, minutes into sixty seconds, etc.

Hours of the Day

This chart explains the position of the sun and the relative lightness or darkness at certain hours. Because days are longer on Vita, people usually sleep longer; it is not unusual for someone to spend ten hours sleeping and twenty hours awake.

Days of the Week

The days of the week are not referred to by name, but by their position in the month; it would be correct to say both "the fifteenth" or "the second fifth" (fifth day of the second week), for example. Days themselves are referred to as numbers; the eighth, eighteenth and twenty-eighth days of the month are called simply "the eights".

Anhai wicks refer to the weekdays by name, using the ten gods as a basis for the days. This practice is ancient, but was abandoned many years ago for the numerical system of the galdori. These are the days of the week in Anhau:

  • Aldia(s) (ones)
  • Hudia(s) (twos)
  • Badia(s) (threes)
  • Vuldia(s) (fours)
  • Rodia(s) (fives)
  • Vespia(s) (sixes)
  • Hurtia(s) (sevens)
  • Imadia(s) (eights)
  • Naudia(s) (nines)
  • Ophia(s) (tens)
