University of Gior

From ThornsWiki

The University of Gior is where all galdori attend to learn non-magic academia and discover their place in society. Established during the rule of Aminark Giore, the school started as a small place of learning, though over time it has gradually expanded to allow the schooling of approximately three thousand students.

Passives who do not fall into Priesthood are allowed to attend the University to learn the crucial academic and social skills required to be a functioning member of society.

History

The University was founded by the Da Giore family, though it was not Aminark who started it, but in fact her twelfth daughter Akenate. The young woman was passive born, and with no need to study in the Temple, she took it upon herself to build an institution that would allow the better learning of academia to ensure their society had a balance of educated labourers.

Over the years, the university has expanded to allow not only academic study but also basic life skills to ensure all Gioran children know how to survive on their own.

Initiation Test

The University of Gior begins accepting students at the age of ten, regardless of whether they pass or fail the passive testing at the Temple Of Qrieth.

Studies

Students of the University study a variety of subjects, including but not limited to:

  • Arithmetic
  • Foreign Languages
  • Science (various)
  • History
  • Basic Law
  • Social Studies
  • Diplomacy
  • Creative Writing
  • Arts
  • Cooking and Domestic Duties
  • Carving (Natural Non-Magic enhanced)
  • Trade Skills (carpentry, fabrication, ect)
  • Business Studies
  • Agriculture

Faculty

The faculty at the University are academic teachers, scientists, explorers and other intellectuals both of passive and galdori background. The Trade Skills are mostly taught by skilled members of the community

There is a Head Matron who helps to run the facility along with her administrative staff, who is employed by a delegate of the leading family.

Campus

The University of Gior is deceptively no more than a large arching doorway. When you enter, the interior houses a small greeting desk, in which you can receive a map that depicts a maze of halls and tunnels, rooms and antechambers laid out like some sort of multi-level ants nest. These lead to the classrooms, lecture halls, cafeteria and accommodation.

The Accommodation

The accommodation provided at the University is divided into two sections; Student Accommodation and Faculty Accommodation. Cleaning is done daily at the eleventh hour, though this can be postponed if a privacy sign is hung on the door.

Student Accommodation:

Accommodation is in the form of carved dorm rooms that can house two same sex students at a time. It is a simple lodging with carved beds in each side of the room, two stone desks and wooden chests for clothing and a fireplace. All meals are provided in the cafeteria and students are free to come and go as they please outside of school hours, provided at least one sixteen year old chaperone is within the group and they are back before twenty seven o'clock.

Most students however do not live on campus, due to the ease of access to their families, and the requirement for galdori children to also attend the Temple Of Qrieth for magical studies.

Faculty Accommodation

Staff are offered accommodation if they so choose it, in the form of a moderate carved lodging that provides a bed, stone carved wardrobe, desk, kitchenette, fireplace, small separate combined lounge and dining area and a bathroom with a small bath. All meals are provided in the cafeteria, but staff are welcome to cook their own meals using the kitchenette.
