Traveling Speeds by Transportation Method

There are 30 hours in a Vitan day, 10-15 of which are in daylight and considered best for traveling. For an average person and animal, this means that land travel takes place for those hours with rests and breaks along the way that may include stopping in villages, staying at roadside inns, or camping on the side of the road with or without proper equipment.

The Kingdom of Anaxas is roughly 2,520 miles (4056km) East to West and 835 miles (1344km) North to South, or about 2,100,000 square miles (3,379,622 sq km) in area.

Foot Travel

Regardless of race, the average lightly-encumbered adult Vitan can cover 30-38.5 miles (48-62km) per day on foot (15 hours walking). The average is 35 miles/day (56km/day) on foot.

Carriage Travel

The average horse- or kenser-drawn carriage can cover 125-150 miles (200-241km) per day (15 hours traveling) with a kenser being more enduring but slower than a horse, meaning they can travel longer, which may or may not even out the travel times depending on the geography, season, and weather.

Airship Travel

Average airship speeds range between 25-45mph (40-120kmh), though during clear skies 35mph (56kmh) is considered average safe speed for a small, crewed vessel. Very tiny, individually-owned private craft have been rumored to travel at speeds of more than 50mph (80.5kmh), though no one has come forward with this on record. Large, cumbersome passenger liner airships and merchant ships tend to travel at 25-30mph (40-48kmh). Storms, rain, and other weather conditions affect travel times, sometimes preventing flight entirely because of the volatile nature of the gas that keeps airships afloat and the delicate instruments needed to keep it all in balance.

Often airships will be crewed with more than one pilot, allowing them to rotate shifts and fly for a full 30-hour day without risking backlash, brailing, and exhaustion.

This means that the average airship flying at 35mph (72kmh) for a whole 30-hour day can cover up to 1,050 miles (1,689 kilometers)!

Steamboat Travel

The average steamship can travel upriver at up to 9mph-20mph (14kmh-32kmh) and across the sea at 10-25mph (16-40kmh) depending on weather conditions. Depending on the crew of the steamship, like an airship, no stopovers for rest are necessary. An average river ship traveling 10mph upriver can cover 300 miles (482km) a day.

Methods of Travel in Anaxas

Most travel is done by foot, bicycle, mount, or carriage. The average human or wick has access to one or two of these things, while occasionally they can afford a steam-motored cab or a steam ferry ride up a river to their distant destination. Galdori prefer carriages, rickshaws, steam-motor cabs, boats, or airships for travel. The main roads, especially between Vienda, Brunnhold, Numbrey and Old Rose Harbor are paved, well-maintained, and patrolled by Seventen. Smaller cities and villages have cobblestone or dirt roads, gravel on occasion, and rarer but still present patrols. As one travels north and west in Anaxas, the roads become less frequent, less maintained, and the military presence becomes limited to the few outposts scattered near the borders.

Anhau and the hatcher territories to the west are abandoned, foggy, and no one willingly travels there without some obscure reason. No one even realizes that Anhau exists, tucked protectively in the valley away from view. The Northern Tors and Fen Kierden are for the most part uninhabited, save for a few human and wick settlements. The border between Mugroba and Anaxas has a Seventen Outpost south of the Fen.

The Arova and Talarma Rivers are main bodies of trade, transportation and movement across the country from east to west. Airships are necessary to cross over the Shier Mountains and trade with Hesse and all sea-faring commerce between Mugroba and other Kingdoms begins and ends in Old Rose Harbor.

This page is currently under construction, but here are basic travel times based on travel by airship from Brunnhold to Vienda being less than a single day of airship flight. Please understand that weather conditions and seasons affect airship travel times by a few minutes to a few days, depending on the severity of the weather.
