So You Want To Be A Seventen

From ThornsWiki

So, you want to be a Seventen officer, a peacemaker, an enforcer of the law! Below are some criteria for doing just that.

Responsibilities of the Seventen

The number one responsibility of The Seventen, according to the Almanac of Peace (the manual by which the Seventen derive their code of ethics), is the protection and safety of the human and galdori populations of Anaxas. In the ideal world described by the Almanac, humans feel safe to walk the streets, and are protected by the strongest race, who are well-suited to this job. The galdori civilians are also safe to pursue their lives and interests without fearing attack.

The Seventen patrol the city, making certain that criminals are caught and dealt with swiftly. The Seventen are not asked to mete out justice; that is for the courts to do. They merely apprehend and confine wrongdoers until they can be dealt with. As an elite police force, the Seventen should be constantly aware of all illicit goings-on in the city, and attempt to shut down drug rings, mobs and gangs, and any other organization that threatens the public safety and the peace.

Some Seventen are specialists, investigators who help the regular ranks to solve tough crimes; the Seventen also employs healers, who are there to tend to wounded officers, and scryers, who can be useful in keeping watch over the officers while they are out on patrol.

Rules by which the Seventen must abide

These are the rules by which Seventen officers are held. Although some officers choose not to follow these rules, they are usually punished when caught breaking them.

  • A Seventen officer must always obey his commanding officer; should a questionable order be given by a superior officer, the Seventen should always check with his direct commander;
  • A Seventen officer should protect the weak and always respond to pleas for help;
  • A Seventen officer should only kill when necessary, never without due cause;
  • A Seventen officer should not commit acts of wanton destruction unless it is necessitated by his circumstances;
  • A Seventen officer should never strike, harm or cast an unfriendly spell at a superior officer;
  • A Seventen officer should use proper and appropriate force when apprehending criminals, no more than is necessary;
  • A Seventen officer should always uphold the noble uses of magic;
  • A Seventen officer must never abuse his position to attain any substance, whether it be money, goods or services;
  • A Seventen officer should always be alert on the job, and never succumb to illicit substances;
  • A Seventen officer should never allow personal feelings or personal goals to influence his actions on the job;
  • A Seventen officer should be an example of valor, goodness and intelligence to all around him.

Consequences

If a Seventen officer does not follow the rules laid out for them through Anaxi Law, he or she is subject to disciplinary action; most of this involves the stripping of rights, unpaid leave from duty, or a hearing (depending on the severity of the infraction). Like the military, Seventen officers can be court marshaled for serious offenses.

The most severe punishment ever given to a Seventen officer (apart from the standard firing) was life imprisonment, when, in 2684, Inspector Bernard Gates killed six of his underlings in a blind rage. He was judged fit to stand trial, and was sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
