Death & Burial in Anaxas

Phasmonias in Anaxas

Often, galdori will erect a Phasmonia or "city of ghosts", to house ghosts until they enter The Antelife. Phasmonias can be found in Anaxas as well as Mugroba, Hesse, Gior and Bastia. Two such places are the Ghost Town, the largest phasmonia in Anaxas, and Long-go Graveyard in Anhau. The bodies of the dead are buried in these towns by various religious sects, some specifically created to the handling of the dead (like the Cadus Barr of Bastia) and some, like The Everine, in charge of all matters pertaining to the supernatural.

Phasmonias can be very dangerous for non-experts to enter.

Burial and Funerals

Humans are not buried by the Everine (or the equivalent religious sect), but many humans in these Kingdoms build phasmonias anyway, though they are essentially ineffective at herding ghosts into one area. Undertakers exist for the same purpose as the Everine do in this situation, albeit considerably more secular. For a charge, they will transport the dead to a nearby phasmonia and pray over the body to ensure a peaceful rest.

Families do not usually take part in the actual interring of the bodies (unless they have to be). Funerals are more like wakes, with family and friends gathering for a solemn meeting while the body is being interred by the undertaker. Galdori and humans observe deaths in much the same way, with little pomp and circumstance and very little personal religion being drawn into it. The Everine (or the undertaker) take care of the religious portion of the arrangement.

The ancient human tradition of leaving bodies in the wild to decompose has been deemed barbaric by modern society, so humans who cannot afford an undertaker typically inter their dead in graves, wrapped in grey linen. Although the use of graves has fallen off since undertaking became a more prominent profession, some ancient open-air graveyards still exist (such as Rookwen Graveyard in Vienda).
