Aekesk

In Gior, the basic monetary unit is called a Aekesk. It splits thusly:

  • 1 aekesk = 10 haleks
  • 1 halek = 10 kesks
  • 1 kesk = 2 leks (half kesk) or 4 forts (fourths of a kesk)
  • 1 lek = 2 es

For approximation, here's a comparison price list. This list will change with the game economy.

  • 1 aekesk is a decent amount of money - approximately $300 in modern US money, enough to pay off half the monthly rent.
  • 1 halek is about $30 in today's money, enough to pay for a regular dinner out, or a large fancy bar tab.
  • 1 kesk is about $3 in today's money, enough to buy a loaf of bread or a couple drinks.
  • 1 lek is enough to buy a paper, a beer or cheap bread.
  • 1 es is enough to buy a small piece of candy - it's mostly used as kid's pocket change.

Aekesks are a squared palm sized note made of a type of paper that is derived from the lichen that grows in Imaan's Caverns, with all other monetary being coins that are round in shape. Aekesks are inked on one side with the head of the current leading family Matriarch and her thumbprint, and the head of Aminark Giore on the other. The halek is stamped with the symbol of the leading family, and kesks are stamped with the symbol of the Da Giore family. The design of the aekesk and halek change as new leaders are put into power, making it easy to tell when a coin or note was issued by the face on it. Leks and es have the literal word pressed into them. The coins are sized in a hierarchical manner.

Coins are made from obsidian carved from the depths of Citeiva with gold inlay in the stamping. Coins are hardended further with magic during the minting process, to ensure they don't shatter if dropped. Due to the unusual material and magical infusion, they are extremely difficult to forge.
